You know what I mean by EFL-era, right?
I’m talking about post-2017, our return to the ranks of the Football League. It was the Football League when we left, but we came back to the EFL. This is our ninth season back in the league, and it seems like the trips to Southport and Alfreton were just a distant memory, like recalling some long-forgotten nightmare while sitting out in the sun hours after waking up.
I just finished a piece on Brooke Norton-Cuffy, and wrote how we also had Liam Cullen and Morgan Whittaker on loan at the same time. Lewis Fiorini was the loan star that year, so it’s mad to think those three have gone on to much better things. It got me thinking about signings, and how we rate them both at the time, and with hindsight.
I wanted to do a little series on some of the best and worst of the EFL era, and started it with best loan signings and worst signings, so I thought I’d put together something different – a list of the top six that I think were (are) hugely underrated. I’m going to include both loans and permanent deals in this section.
They’re in no particular order. Let’s see if we spark some debate, shall we?
