Cardiff City – Perry Ng
Cardiff have a lot of players I’d like, and while they didn’t manage to break us down at their place, Ng was the one who really stood out at ours.
I’ve liked him for a long while, from his time at Crewe. He’s mobile, and while he’s a defender, he’s equally as comfortable in attack. He’d suit our high-energy, swift attacking patterns, and could step into Tendayi’s shoes with ease.
Like Ten, he has a goal and assist in him, and he just oozes quality up and down the line. He must be a joy to watch every week.
Doncaster Rovers – Brandon Hanlan
This is tough because we didn’t see a lot of them back at our place. They did get back to 1-1 before we won, and maybe my pick will surprise their supporters. Let’s face it, after yesterday, I’m not their favourite anyway. I know Molyneux and Bailey are their main men, but they have a player not getting headlines or goals with a profile I’ve always liked in Hanlan.
He’s scored seven in 43 for them, but anyone looking at numbers knows Rob Street has ‘only’ scored nine, and look how pivotal he’s been. In Hanlan, they have that physical, mobile striker, although he’s clearly not impressing as he’s used as a late sub. I just think for us, that late physical presence would suit us far more than any of their ‘better’ players.
Exeter City – Joe Whitworth
This is a pick born purely out of admiration rather than a desire to have a player for ourselves. Our keeper is Team of the Season quality, and these picks aren’t about me replacing anyone. But, over two matches against Exeter, it’s Whitworth who has stood out to me.
Bold shout: if Joe Whitworth were 6ft 5in and 5ft 10in, he’d be the next England keeper. His shot-stopping is excellent, he’s so talented, and yet, size might hold him back. I hope not, I hope he is able to step up further, because in terms of his ability, he’s up there with the best in this division, no doubt. I’m talking Carl Rushworth quality, no questions asked.
