Which Areas Might Lincoln City Be Looking To Target This Summer Transfer Window

Wigan 2022/23

Permanent: Luke Brennan (Blackburn Rovers), Youssef Chentouf (Free agent), Josh Stones (Guiseley), Ryan Nyambe (Blackburn Rovers), Ethan Mitchell (Plymouth Argyle), Joe Rodwell-Grant (Preston North End), Abdi Sharif (Liverpool), Matt Wonnacott (Torquay United), Dylan Dwyer (Tranmere Rovers), Joe Winstanley (Brighton & Hove Albion), Anthony Scully (Lincoln City)

Loans: Nathan Broadhead (Everton), Ashley Fletcher (Watford), Rarmani Edmonds-Green (Huddersfield Town)

Working chronologically, I thought we’d start with teams promoted in 2021/22, and look for those that maybe financially are comparable. I think we’re probably going to be talking about a smaller budget than most of these clubs, but also we’re not looking at teams paying £5m for players.

Wigan won League One in 2022, and they stuck to a domestic transfer policy. That’s difficult in this day and age, because as Ali Maxwell said in our recent podcast, there will always be someone looking to pay more for domestic players.

They did rely quite heavily on loan players, and perhaps ironically, the only non-English player they signed in what would be an ESC slot was from Slovan Liberec, Christ Tiéhi, the same club we signed Ivan from, although that was in January and we’re only looking at summer recruitment here.

Their recruitment was poor, and they were bottom of the table at the end of the season.
