Lincoln City step into unknown territory, the Championship, with a huge task ahead.
Our recruitment has been thorough in recent seasons, whether from Ireland, Ukraine or League Two. We’ve had to fish in many different waters, and with some of our signings, you might say we’ve been prepping for the Championship anyway. Josh Honohan was tipped for a Championship move before coming to play for us, while Ivan Varfolomeev is another who came from a competitive top-flight to a level perhaps lower than expected. He’ll be in the Championship next season, and he’s sure to be joined by a handful of new players.
I thought I’d take a look back over the last couple of seasons and find out where some of our peers have been shopping when they go up. Every team does it differently, but I want to see if there are any patterns or areas where teams have had some success. Of course, not all teams promoted from our division are worth comparing; Birmingham, Sunderland and Wrexham wouldn’t be doing the smart things that less financially restrained clubs will.
Oxford, Plymouth and maybe even Portsmouth or Derby could give us clues as to where in the world we might look to exploit. Once I’ve ascertained that in this article, I’ll seek to do something around possible targets from those areas for later in the week.
