2025/26 – League One Champions
I know this is my opinion, and that I can’t compare properly to the early eighties or anything earlier, but I think this is the best Lincoln City team ever.
How can it not be? 29 games unbeaten, with our PPG, is the best EFL run ever. Not just for Lincoln, not just League One, but ever. More wins and more points than the great Liverpool and Leeds United sides of the seventies and eighties.
That would be an achievement if we were top of the budget table, but we’re not even in the top half. We’ve done this, spending 25% of the budget Luton has, and half of the likes of Wycombe Wanderers. That context, away from the actual football output, makes this the best Lincoln team ever.
In 1975/76, we weren’t underdogs: we’d only missed out on promotion on goal average the year before. In the early eighties, we were relegated, sure, but we were among the favourites for promotion from Division Four. Maybe 81/82 was comparable, and had those players earned that promotion, then I could see the counterargument, but achievement has to go hand-in-hand with potential and ability.
That is why, for me, this is the greatest Lincoln City team ever.
