2016/17 – National League / FA Cup Run
The only thing that could stop this from being a really strong argument is the level. We were top six in terms of budget, I’d wager, and by the end of the season, maybe a little better.
Still, you have to win the division to go up and we did. We managed that alongside a long FA Trophy run and, of course, a record-breaking FA Cup run.
In terms of the joy, coming back from the wilderness after six years, nothing can match this. The feeling of getting back to being a club, being reborn, it cannot be bottled. That’s not the debate here, though. The debate is the best team ever, and while the 2016/17 team are legends, each and every single one of them, were they better than Murphy’s side of the eighties, or the 75/76 side?
That’s not for me to say (until the last page) but I do think this has been my favourite Lincoln City side of my time following the club.
