Five Players Lincoln City Might Have Scouted In The USL

Leo Afonso – Rhode Island

We might be talking about a division that sits somewhere around our fifth tier, but there aren’t many players at that level who have played with Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba in the recent past. Afonso has: he is a Brazilian forward who was raised in Florida and developed with Boca United, Philadelphia Union and Inter Miami before playing college football for Virginia Cavaliers. He was selected by Inter Miami in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, went on to make his MLS debut that year and later had a spell with Atlanta United. Afonso signed for Rhode Island FC in January 2026 on a one-year deal, bringing MLS and MLS Next Pro experience to their attack.

He is a centre forward, 5ft 11in, so he might not quite fit our profile, but he is an attacking force. Has training and playing with big names helped him? His numbers point to a forward who is consistently finding dangerous areas, with 46 penalty-box touches, 17 progressive runs and 34 shots across 928 minutes, showing a player heavily involved in attacking phases. The return of three goals from 3.9 xG suggests he has not quite maximised his chances, while a 35.3% shot accuracy rate leaves room for sharper execution. What stands out most is his overall activity: 21 shot assists, 32 crosses, 97 offensive duels and 13 fouls suffered all suggest a forward who affects games beyond goals, even if the end product still needs refining.
