Queens Park Rangers Sign Tariq Lamptey
Queens Park Rangers have completed the signing of Tariq Lamptey on a free transfer following his departure from Fiorentina.
The 25-year-old returns to west London six years after leaving Chelsea, where he progressed through the academy and made three first-team appearances. He later joined Brighton and played 122 times for the club.
Lamptey moved to Fiorentina last September, but his time in Italy was disrupted by a serious injury. He ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament just 22 minutes into his first start, having previously made a three-minute substitute appearance.
He did not play for the club again, and Fiorentina announced in May that his contract had been terminated by mutual agreement.
The former Brighton defender has now joined QPR ahead of their Championship campaign and said the project presented to him helped convince him to make the move.
“I’m excited for the opportunity ahead.
“When I spoke to the gaffer and Christian Nourry, the project was an encouraging one. The team have ambitious goals for this season, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Lamptey also said he was determined to return to the level he showed earlier in his career.
“I know what I’m capable of and I set myself high standards. I had a great start to my career, and I’ll keep continuing that.”
The defender remains in recovery from his knee injury, although he has said he is not far away from returning. QPR face Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly at Loftus Road on Saturday before beginning their Championship season away at Portsmouth on August 15.
