With the Championship season about to get underway, plenty of our divisional rivals are still attempting to shape their squads before the transfer window closes.
Portsmouth Agree Deal For Midfielder
Portsmouth appear to be closing in on their seventh signing of the summer after reaching an agreement with Antalyaspor for midfielder Jesper Ceesay. According to reports on Friday, the Championship club have agreed a deal worth around £680,000 for the Gambia international.
The 24-year-old is currently with Antalyaspor, but the Turkish club were relegated from the Süper Lig last season and are dealing with financial difficulties. Club president Mustafa Ergun has now publicly confirmed Portsmouth’s interest has developed into an agreement.
“We have reached an agreement with Portsmouth regarding Jesper Ceesay.”
Ceesay, who was born in Sweden and represents Gambia internationally, previously played for Brommapojkarna, AIK and IFK Norrköping before moving to Turkey. His expected arrival would further strengthen John Mousinho’s squad, although the Pompey boss has made it clear that the club are still looking for additional recruits.
“We’re going to spend as much as possible. We just have to remember as a football club we can spend a percentage of our revenue and top up like every club.
“My very basic take on it is the owners here will spend as much as possible. That will still leave us in a very difficult spot in terms of how we compete in the league.
“So we’re willing to spend, limited in what we can spend and in a market where we have some very big hitters around us.”
Portsmouth finished 18th in the Championship last season and will once again be one of the sides looking to establish themselves in the division. They begin their competitive campaign against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup.
