West Ham United Striker Backed For Germany Recall
West Ham United striker Niclas Füllkrug has received backing for a Germany recall from Lothar Matthäus after rediscovering his scoring touch at Werder Bremen. The 33-year-old is joint-top of the Bundesliga scoring charts following his return to the club on loan.
Füllkrug scored twice in Bremen’s 2-2 draw with Paderborn at the weekend, taking his league tally to six and drawing level with Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick. His form follows difficult spells with the Hammers and AC Milan, where he also spent time on loan.
Writing in his Sky Germany column, Matthäus attributed the improvement to the striker’s surroundings. He believes Bremen have provided the support Füllkrug lacked during his time away.
“Füllkrug feels comfortable in Bremen, and it shows. At West Ham and Milan, he did not feel the warmth, affection and trust that he receives at Werder.”
Matthäus also suggested there could be a place for the experienced forward as Jürgen Klopp reshapes the national team. Füllkrug has scored 14 goals in 24 Germany appearances, although his last international outing came in June 2025.
“The numbers speak for him, even if he is getting on in years. Jürgen Klopp wants to rejuvenate the national team, but the younger players are still too inconsistent in their performances.
“Having an experienced option like Füllkrug coming off the bench would give me confidence. However, the final decision rests with the national team coach.”
