Free Agents: Some tantalising names from across all three Football League divisions

Lloyd Isgrove

Isgrove is 26 and has started just 47 matches in his entire career. He’s a man who has oozed promise from a young age, but who has seen it ooze away and the well run dry.

He doesn’t show that anymore, now he’s on the verge of dropping onto the football scrapheap, a cautionary tale of what can go wrong when the world looks to be at your feet.

Isgrove began his career with Southampton, coming through their youth ranks and labelled as a bright young thing. He went out on loan to get senior experience and has proven to aspiring young players what can happen when a loan move goes wrong. He’s played for Peterborough, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley on loan, before joining the latter permanently.

They went down and loaned him out again, this time to Portsmouth. He was on the books of two sides aiming for promotion and guess how many league games he played all season? Two. He didn’t even get a kick at Fratton Park.

Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Peterborough; notice anything? They’re all above us in the Football League. His 47 matches have come at bigger clubs on bigger stages and I think there’s gold here if he’s managed correctly.

He’s a winger, right sided usually but able to play on the left, which fits with our ethos of playing wide players. He’s pacey and can deliver a cross, but he needs to make the right move next. I firmly believe he could still be a good League One player, especially for a side hoping to establish themselves at the level.

  1. Interesting read Gary, personally I agree with Mandron. He’d be a good addition to the squad.
Understood Danny Cowley to have indicated he would be looking at National League and Non League, any thoughts on players from there?

  2. Facts about the manager is all we actually care about, especially now it’s reported he’s being interviewed by West Brom. You keep telling us you’ve got his phone number Gary. Call it!
