9. Charles Vernam

Local lad Charles Vernam arrived with fanfare but failed to deliver. Having impressed at Bradford and Burton, expectations were high that he’d add pace and directness to our wide options. Instead, he struggled for consistency and fitness, managing only six League One starts across 29 total appearances. His only goal came in the EFL Trophy, proving he just didn’t impact us in the league.
A pre-season injury just before the opening day halted his momentum, and he never really recovered. There were glimpses of quality, but they were fleeting. Eventually sold to Grimsby, his departure closed a disappointing chapter. That was a shame, because the intent behind his signing was sound, but the outcome was anything but.
