One thing Lincoln City will need when stepping into the Championship is some technical ability.
I’m not saying our players don’t have that, but we’ll need more of it. We’ll need to add to those magic makers, rather than relying on Jack Moylan and Reeco Hackett. We’ll likely look for the sort of loans that we’ve avoided in recent seasons, the game-changer.
Why? The first aim next season will be survival. To do that, we may need to operate slightly outside of the structure we’ve used in recent seasons. We won’t want to be reliant on loan players (like Eyoma, Palmer, Rogers, Johnson etc), but we will surely wish to add a little quality, the sort our money can’t buy, to help us get over the line in those close games.
The way it looks, we’ll be going up against Oxford or Plymouth. We might be facing Cardiff and Stevenage, and these are the games we might need a moment of brilliance to separate the two sides. That could come in the form of a big loan, just as it has with Ryan Oné.
This summer, we’ll be fishing in different waters. In the past, we’ve found value in players having their first loan (Johnson, Rogers, Eyoma), but it is a risk. We might look to League One this season, and consider players who have proven a degree of ability in the senior game, looking for a step up to the Championship.

Putting logistics aside, and competition, and wages, here are six League One loans with a parent club that may wish to see them get a step up. I have picked only players from a level above the Championship, as we might struggle to get someone like Oné back on loan when we’re in the same division as the parent club. Also, in the case of two of the players, if their current loan club goes up, we might struggle to compete with them getting a return to that club.
Bolton. I’m talking about Bolton.
