Ten Free Agents Championship Clubs Like Lincoln City Could Still Sign

Niall Huggins

Last club: Sunderland

Niall Huggins is a 25-year-old full-back who came through the academy at Leeds United after joining the club at the age of eight. He progressed through their youth system and made his senior debut in a Premier League game against Arsenal in February 2021 before moving to Sunderland on a permanent basis later that year. Huggins helped the Black Cats win promotion from League One through the play-offs during his first season and subsequently made 20 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring his first professional goal in a Championship victory over Watford. He also represented Wales at under-21 level and received his first senior call-up in November 2023.

Although primarily listed as a right-back, Huggins has experience on the opposite side and began his development as an attacking player before being converted into a defender. That versatility could make him a useful addition for an EFL club seeking cover in both full-back positions, while his background at Leeds and Sunderland means he has been exposed to demanding environments and football at several levels. A loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers during the 2025/26 season provided him with more regular senior minutes, and at 25 he should still have scope to develop if he can find a club willing to offer him consistent football.
