Ten Free Agents Championship Clubs Like Lincoln City Could Still Sign

Jamie Vardy

Last club: Cremonese

Jamie Vardy is a 39-year-old striker whose extraordinary career has taken him from non-league football to Premier League and international success. After prolific spells with Stocksbridge Park Steels, FC Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town, he joined Leicester City in 2012 and scored 200 goals across 500 appearances. Vardy helped the Foxes win two Championship titles, the Premier League and FA Cup, while he also collected the Premier League Golden Boot in 2019/20. He scored seven times for England and featured at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup before concluding his international career.

Age is the obvious consideration, but Vardy demonstrated that his finishing ability remained intact by scoring seven Serie A goals for Cremonese during the 2025/26 season and becoming the first English winner of the division’s Player of the Month award. He scored 18 Championship goals as recently as 2023/24, helping Leicester secure promotion, and would bring leadership, relentless movement and a proven ability to punish defensive mistakes. His salary and willingness to return to the EFL could prove significant obstacles, but few free agents can match his record, reputation or capacity to influence a dressing room.
