Yann Sturm’s numbers suggest a winger who wants to end up in the penalty area. In the 703-minute scouting sample, he averaged 3.84 shots and 4.35 touches in the box per 90 minutes, alongside 0.60 xG. That is a lot of involvement in scoring positions for someone starting out wide, and more interesting to me than simply counting how many crosses he delivers.

He also averaged 3.58 progressive runs per 90 and completed 71.4% of his dribbles, supporting the assessment of a quick, balanced carrier who can move a team up the pitch. The 21-year-old is right-footed and generally operates from the left, with the ability to come inside and attack the spaces around the striker. At just under six feet, officially listed at 182cm, he offers a reasonable physical profile, although his aerial contribution is limited.

There are areas to develop, particularly his final decisions and defensive positioning. His passing accuracy of 73.3% is another part of the picture to examine, because carrying the ball into dangerous areas only takes you so far if the next action breaks down. Equally, I wouldn’t expect a young winger playing his first season at this level to have everything sorted already.

Sturm developed at Freiburg and spent last season on loan with Ingolstadt before joining Braunschweig in the summer on a deal until 2029. That recent move is probably the biggest obstacle to a winter transfer, but the combination of ball-carrying, penalty-area involvement and scope for improvement makes him a name worth keeping an eye on.
