3. Poacher misbehaving
In my early days as Poacher, the gloves were off, which is quite a feat when you’re dressed as a giant imp. Cyril the Swan and Wolfie were making headlines, and there was almost an expectation that a mascot should misbehave a bit. I’d pole dance on the goalpost or knock a ball to an opposition player, wait for him to pass it back, then boot it away and run off.
You could bring a banner in with a political message, have penalties in the goalmouth, even take the mickey out of fans as you walked past. There was no helper, nobody guiding me around the pitch, and no behavioural guidelines at all.
I once took a six-foot bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale into the ground and swaggered around pretending I’d been drinking it. Try getting that one signed off today. Poacher is there for the kids, is very well behaved and quite right too, although I did have an awful lot of fun when the job description was a bit looser.
