4. Being out by quarter to five

After games I went to with my Dad, we’d be back in the car in time for the Sports Report theme at five o’clock. I can hear it now, followed by something about Chelsea dropping three points and Liverpool pulling further clear. A three o’clock kick-off meant you could be making for the exit at quarter to five, and you could more or less set your watch by it.

We’d be in traffic, having got back to the car, often going past the cemetery on Washingborough Road, back in the days we lived at Chambers Woods, and it seemed the fastest way to Bardney. We’d be home for half five, traffic permitting.

These days, when the board goes up at the end of a half, I start doing sums. A minute or two before the break, another four or five at the end and, if we’re hanging on to a lead, every last one of those minutes feels about twice as long. Getting back to the car for Sports Report feels optimistic when you’re still in your seat at five.
