The Slovenian Job: Ten Players Lincoln City Could Have Been Looking At

We really hit these scouting articles hard a couple of weeks ago, so after a brief hiatus, we’re back with ten players Jez George could be looking at for Lincoln City.

Why Slovenia? In a recent interview with us (a good listen if you’ve missed it), we asked him which his favourite airport was in Europe, and he mentioned Ljubljana. For those not savvy with their European geography, that is in Slovenia, the 48th strongest league in the world according to Opta. That puts it below League One, by the way.

Slovenian teams tend to float around the early stages of the European competitions, with the likes of Celje, Maribor and Olimpija Ljubljana the big names. In terms of international football, Slovenia failed to qualify for the World Cup, finishing third in their group behind Switzerland and Kosovo.

Could Lincoln City be shopping in this area? There is no reason why not – the country has produced some really good footballers. Leeds United defender Jaka Bijol is Slovenian, and he started his youth career at Bravo (more on them a little later as they’ve got a decent squad this season). Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko also hails from Slovenia, while Swansea City striker Žan Vipotnik came from Maribor to south Wales via Bordeaux.

There is value in the Prva liga, won by Celje for the second time in three seasons, but where is it? Who might Lincoln City be looking at?

To determine that, I had a couple of criteria. I figured we’d be looking for a certain age, between 19 and 23. Any younger, and they would perhaps fall into the ‘promising’ category, rather than the ‘oven-ready’ band I think we’re after. I also focused on a wide range of positions, which does make this a rather scattergun approach.

However, I have come up with ten (Ed Harrison chipped in with one) players that might interest Lincoln City, or indeed Championship clubs, for 2026/26.
