Tommy Tynan arrived at City in September 1978 for a club-record £33,000, but almost nothing went right during his 148 days at Sincil Bank. Registration problems delayed his debut, managerial upheaval followed and he managed just one goal in nine appearances before Colin Murphy decided he was not part of the future. Even the nickname ‘Taxi Tommy’ came from the belief that he expected the club to fund taxis back to Sheffield.

The frustrating part is that Tynan was clearly a very good striker, just not for us. He became prolific at Newport County, formed a superb partnership with John Aldridge and later became a Plymouth Argyle legend, with Graham Taylor describing him as one of the best natural finishers he had seen. He also developed a habit of scoring against City, which only made his brief and expensive spell at Sincil Bank feel even worse.
