Here is a player not a lot of younger Imps will know too much about. He was one of those players who did very little at City to suggest what was coming later. He scored just four times in 29 league appearances after arriving from non-league football in 1984, and eventually drifted back out of the professional game with spells at Boston United, Shepshed Charterhouse and Grantham. At that stage, it would have been easy to assume his Football League career was finished, and fans would have happily driven him to his next club, although he did go to Malta on loan while with City, so the petrol would have cost a bit.

Instead, Gerry Francis remembered White from a game against Bristol Rovers, tracked him down and gave him another chance. White took it superbly, scoring 53 league goals for Rovers before going on to play in the Premier League with QPR and enjoy further spells with Notts County, Watford and Shrewsbury. For a striker who had barely made an impression at Sincil Bank, it became a remarkably good professional career.
