‘I’ll Drive You There’ – Ten Lincoln City Players We’d Have Happily Got Rid Of Who Later Excelled

Kyle Wootton

Kyle Wootton came to City on loan from Scunthorpe in 2015 as cover for Matt Rhead and Liam Hearn, making five appearances and scoring once in a 2-1 win at Aldershot. At the time, he looked like another young striker whose career might drift, especially as first-team chances remained limited back at Scunthorpe and further loans followed. There was little in that short spell at Sincil Bank to suggest what he would eventually become.

Wootton really found himself at Notts County, where regular football turned him into a prolific National League striker, before Stockport County took him back into the EFL. He helped them win League Two, twice became their Player of the Season and scored 19 league goals in 2025/26, earning a place in the League One Team of the Season. For someone who was little more than emergency cover for us, he developed into a remarkably effective Football League forward.
