Josh Ginnelly arrived on loan from Burnley in January 2017 having already scored against us for Altrincham, and played his part as Danny Cowley’s side won the National League title. Across two spells he made 36 appearances and scored three times, but he never really convinced everyone, with one infamous moment against Port Vale seeing him booed for turning back towards his own goal rather than attacking his defender. There was clearly talent there, but he often seemed reluctant to take the risks his pace and ability demanded.

After leaving City, Ginnelly eventually found a better fit elsewhere, particularly with Hearts, where he became a much more productive attacking player and scored regularly. He played in Europe, and later earned a move to Championship outfit Swansea City, although his time there was disrupted before his release in 2025. The player we saw at Sincil Bank always looked capable of more, and his subsequent career showed that there was a useful player there once he found the right environment.
