Tanto Olaofe signed for Lincoln City this weekend, and one Charlton supporter made the infamous ‘I’ll drive him to you’ comment.
Fans are fickle, and one man’s outcast is another man’s key player. Conor McGrandles probably shows Charlton don’t always know what they’re doing, and as for fans, we know nothing. How often have we blasted a player, celebrated his departure, only for him to be outrageously good elsewhere?
The conversation came up on the podcast last night, so I’ve put together a top ten ‘I’ll drive you there’ list of players we were happy to get rid of, who later proved to be a massive hit with other clubs.
I’d say enjoy, but the fans of the clubs they moved to might enjoy this one even more.
Jon Nolan
Jon Nolan was, frankly, poor for City, despite clearly having ability on the ball and the vision to play at a higher level. He drifted through games, never found any consistency and then asked to join Wrexham on loan midway through the 2015/16 season, further damaging his standing at Sincil Bank. By the time he returned, his opportunities were limited, and his contract was eventually terminated, with fans not fussed at all.
What followed showed why there had always been belief in his talent, because regular football and a more suitable role brought the best out of him. He helped Grimsby win promotion, became Shrewsbury’s Player of the Year and later earned a move to Championship Ipswich as part of a £2 million double deal. Nolan simply looked a much better player elsewhere than he ever did for the Imps.
