Finally, let’s chuckle at links to Rob Hunt, shall we?
Now, on paper, this looks solid. Hunt was at Oldham, and the date is early 2019, so we’re in the mix at the top of the League Two table. We are paying decent wages for League Two, and Hunt is a regular for the Latics.
The problem came when explaining the specifics. The report suggested he was out of contract in the summer, but he was not; he had a year to run to 2020. That meant to get him, we’d have to pay a fee, and the release clause was Β£300,000. Sure, we’d splashed out on John Akinde, a figure which turned out to be a little shy of that, but for a right back?
Remember, we also had Neal Eardley in the squad, a player that seemed immovable, so we’d be spending a club record fee on a full back who wouldn’t be first choice? Not going to happen.
What is interesting is that he has since twice won a League Two title (Swindon 2019/20 and Orient 2022/23) and he’s currently with Danny Cowley and Colchester, the same manager in charge when we were linked.
Maybe this one wasn’t all fiction?
