We’ve always had a good run with keepers, certainly in the EFL era. Alex Palmer, Josh Griffiths and Carl Rushworth were good loans, while understudies like Sam Long and Jordan Wright had potential. Recently, we’ve gone for Lukas Jensen and George Wickens, and all those keepers have one thing in common – youth.
The only veteran we’ve gone for since 2017/18 was Matt Gilks (okay, maybe Sam Slocombe), so when Lee Burge was linked with us in 2022, something felt awry. It wasn’t something I could ever see us doing, given his age at the time (29).
We didn’t sign him, Northampton did, and he’s made 96 appearances in the league for them since. It just never felt like he was Sincil Bank-bound.
