Yep, last night really was a pinnacle.

City’s 4-0 dismantling of Northampton Town was another marker of how far this side has evolved under Michael Skubala. From the outset the Imps were sharp and assertive, Draper going close before turning provider for Ryan Oné, whose curling finish set the tone inside the opening exchanges. At 1-0 there was no anxiety, only control. We dictated tempo, pressed high and never allowed Northampton a foothold. The second arrived early in the second half after a Moylan press forced an error, the Irishman finishing with typical composure, and from that point the contest felt settled. Even before the red card for Vale, City were dominant, moving the ball with confidence and purpose.

With the extra man the pressure became relentless. Varfolomeev’s thunderous strike from the edge of the area made it three after slick interplay through midfield, and Street added a fourth when Moylan’s effort was parried into his path. Fitzsimons prevented further damage, denying Oné and Jefferies as waves of red and white shirts poured forward. It was ruthless without being reckless, controlled without being cautious. The unbeaten run stretched on, the gap to those below widened, and the performance under the lights reinforced a simple truth: this is no longer a side hoping to compete, it is a side that knows it belongs near the summit.
