City’s 4-1 victory over Crawley Town was the response a “big game” demanded, even if it began in the worst possible fashion. Inside six minutes, a simple cross was parried into the path of Kamari Doyle, who punished us to make it 1-0 and briefly stir old anxieties. The reaction, though, was immediate and emphatic. Darikwa struck the bar as we surged forward, and the equaliser arrived when Jeffries’ excellent delivery was met by James Collins, who powered home a proper striker’s header.

From there the Imps found rhythm and confidence. Makama saw a diving header come back off the woodwork but reacted sharply to convert the rebound, and before the break Jeffries capped a superb display by finishing from Makama’s driven cross after a slick passing move. From 1-0 down to 3-1 up, it was a half of intent, movement and cutting edge.

The second period required control rather than chaos. Crawley enjoyed a spell of possession and Quitirna asked questions, yet Wickens and the back line stood firm. Changes injected fresh energy, Gardner particularly lively as spaces opened up. Hamilton spurned one chance that would have made it four, but he soon turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass for Gardner to race clear and fire across goal for his first for the Imps.
