Ten Free Agents That Might Interest Lincoln City In The Championship

Jacob Brown

Jacob Brown has built a solid career across the Football League, initially breaking through with Barnsley before helping the Tykes win promotion back to the Championship in 2018/19. He later became an important player for Stoke City, scoring 26 goals across three seasons and winning the club’s Player of the Year award in 2022, before moving to Premier League side Luton Town in 2023. Brown has since added top-flight experience to an already versatile résumé, featuring as a forward, winger and wing-back during his career, while also earning senior international caps for Scotland. After struggling for regular football with Luton this season, he joined Portsmouth on loan in February and brought proven Championship pedigree to Fratton Park.

Statistically, Brown’s 2025/26 season has been one built around versatility and work-rate rather than prolific scoring, with spells at both Luton Town and Portsmouth. Across all competitions, he averaged 23.6 duels per 90 minutes, highlighting his physical approach, while also contributing goals and assists at a rate of 0.1 per 90. His best attacking display arguably came in Portsmouth’s 1-2 defeat against Swansea City in March, where he scored and registered two shots on target, while he also produced an assist in the 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers. Brown’s strongest underlying numbers came through his pressing and defensive contribution, averaging more than ten recoveries per 90 and winning just over half of his aerial duels, making him an energetic and flexible option across the front line.

He’s on the cusp of Championship and League One, and given that he is free, and played 125 times for Stoke in the Championship, he looks decent value.
