Bim Pepple
Bim Pepple was linked with us earlier in the summer, although Portsmouth, Norwich City and Watford were also credited with an interest. The Plymouth Argyle striker scored 18 times in all competitions last season, including 16 in League One, and that sort of return was always likely to attract attention from Championship clubs.
Portsmouth were reported to have stepped up their interest in July, but Plymouth boss Tom Cleverley made it fairly clear that Pepple was a player he wanted to keep. He described the 23-year-old as a “very, very important player” and said he would not want to lose another striker after Lorent Tolaj’s expected departure. Pepple remains an Argyle player, and there has been nothing concrete since to suggest we’re preparing a bid.
I can see why we’d like him, because he’s young, powerful and has already shown he can score regularly at League One level. However, Plymouth clearly value him highly and Portsmouth appeared further down the road than we ever were. Unless the price drops considerably, I suspect this was either an early enquiry or simply a player we were keeping an eye on.
