Joe Emery
Joe Emery was one of the more plausible early summer links, with the 19-year-old Sheffield Wednesday defender fitting the sort of profile we might look at for development. He had only made a handful of senior appearances, including three in the Championship last season, but there was enough around the original report to make it feel more believable than some of the names that were thrown our way.
That one can now be crossed off. Emery signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract on August 5th, committing himself to the Owls for another year, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months. Given that the attraction originally appeared to be around his contract situation and development potential, that effectively removes the opportunity that might have existed earlier in the summer.
I thought there might have been something in this one at the time, but the new deal changes everything. Unless Wednesday suddenly decide to loan him out, which was never the basis of the original story, I cannot see any route to Sincil Bank now.
