18: Alan Sheehan
Alan Sheehan began his professional career with Leicester City, having been recruited from Dublin club Belvedere, and later represented Leeds United, Crewe Alexandra, Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town. More than 100 league appearances for Notts County followed, along with spells at Bradford City and Peterborough United, before he found a long-term home at Luton Town. As the Hatters’ captain, he helped them win consecutive promotions from League Two to the Championship and was named in the 2017/18 League Two PFA Team of the Year.
Maybe this is the harshest pick, but he signed on a short-term deal, but never realised how short-term. He got one game before the pandemic stopped all football, and in his one game, he gave away a penalty which could have cost us three points. One outing, a penalty and two goals conceded looks bad, but in truth, circumstance wasn’t his friend.
Sheehan finished his playing career with Northampton Town and Oldham Athletic before moving into coaching with Luton, Southampton and Swansea City. He eventually became Swansea’s permanent head coach in April 2025, having previously served twice as caretaker, but was dismissed the following November.
