1988: Gordon Hobson, £60,000
With inflation: £172,125
Appearances: 68
Imagine this: a player appears 12 times in the top flight, scoring once to earn his side a 3-3 draw away at the team which eventually finishes third. That summer, he moves to a side just promoted from the non-league scene. Now, it seems madness, but it happened in 1988 when Hobson left Southampton for Lincoln.
He had a couple of decent seasons before leaving, adding to the legacy he’d already created between 1978 and 1985. It meant he spent ten seasons as a Lincoln City player, and probably should have had a testimonial game.
