1933: John Campbell, £1,250
With inflation: £79,703
Appearances: 207
When Johnny Campbell arrived from Leicester City in 1933, it was huge news. The striker had been playing in the First Division, and the Echo carried the news on it’s front page, with a photo, something of a rarity back in the day.
Campbell did not disappoint, going on to make over 200 appearances for the Imps, and becoming the first player to score more than 100 league goals for us. He’s one of only two players to do so, and he may well have carried on, had World War II not ended the Football League calendar.
