It’s fair to say Dean Walling was a good signing, despite the relatively low number of appearances. He had been a stalwart at Carlisle, and when he came to us, he found a real niche. He was a driving force in our promotion from the basement division in 1998, but injury then ruled him out of all but three games of the following season.
Yes, £75,000 for 42 appearances was a relatively low return on investment, but without Walling’s goals and defensive acumen, we’d not have spent that season in the third tier playing the likes of Fulham, Stoke and Manchester City.
