Transfers are what get fans going, and for Lincoln City fans, this week was the transfer of all transfers.
After less than a year of having our first £1m player export, we broke our transfer record to bring in Romanian defender Andrei Coubis. Reports suggest the fee could rise to £2.6m; the expectation is that the base fee will have broken the £1m mark. The club won’t label him as the first £1m purchase, but history may well do just that.
Transfer fees in the modern age are a bit of a grey area, and supporters never really know the sums involved. The last time a fee was broken and revealed at the time of a purchase was in 1997 when Dean Walling arrived. Since then, we’ve been stuck with the ‘undisclosed fees’, although it is safe to assume the £75,000 we spent on Walling has been smashed on several occasions.
We have put together a list of transfer fees over the ages, from those that were in the public domain, to fees that have since been revealed, or assumed, to show how Lincoln City went from the first £1,000 incoming in 1933, to the first £1m less than a century later.
This is how we think the rise looks on a chart, but the nuances are important: inflation, for example, gives you an idea of date, showing when we really did go above and beyond for a player.
